If there's one thing I've learned since getting my period for the first time 14 years ago, it's that your period usually gives absolutely no effs about when it comes. It doesn't care about that brand new white bikini you bought for this weekend or that long road trip you had planned or the fact that you ran out of pads last month and have to run out and get more. No. Effs. Given.

Which is why today I'll be sharing with you, 14 years worth of knowledge on how to to stay fresh and prepared on-the-go - since let's be real, that's usually when it comes anyway.

First things first, if there's anything I've learned it's to designate a pouch/pocket/makeup bag to all your period supplies. I don't know how many times I've thrown things into my bag just to lose it to the deep, dark abyss that is my handbag, never to be seen again. Grab a small toiletry bag and pop everything into it.

WHAT'S IN THE BAG, YOU MIGHT BE ASKING?

  • Pads/Tampons/Menstrual Cups - It wouldn't be a "period bag" without these little guys in it, now would it? Whatever you prefer, toss a few into your bag. Even add some variety by adding in ones for heavy flow, normal, light...etc., so you have it all covered.
  • Change of Undies - It happens. I need more than both hands to count the times I've been out and about and found out I either leaked or didn't know my period was coming and found out the hard way. Grab a pair of cotton undies.
  • Deodorant - Anyone else sweat more when their period comes? Hi, yeah, that's totally me - and it's totally normal. It's caused by the changes in your hormone levels and body temperature during the luteal phase of your period cycle.
  • Chocolate - I mean, there's even some science behind this one. Studies show that eating high quality chocolate while on your period can help alleviate cramps and PMS. Chocolate contains magnesium and also contains phenethylamineome which increases the same endorphins we make when we're in love. Also, it tastes yummy.
  • Summer's Eve Fresh Cycle Cleansing Cloths - These on-the-go cleansing cloths are a must-have in your bag! I'm usually a little freaky about using things like this because I don't want to mess up my body's natural pH level, but these little wipes are formulated to a women's natural pH level and are gynecologist-approved. They're also dye, paraben and alcohol-free - oh, and totally flushable!

If you're looking to stay fresh at home, Summer's Eve has the same wipes in a soft pack that is super convenient to keep in your bathroom as well. They're flushable and made with a patented FreshCycleTM that reduces any period odor without dyes, parabens or alcohol. Not a wipes kind of girl? No worries. Summer's Eve also has a No-rinse Cleansing Foam that will give you the same gentle freshness with 1-2 pumps!
